Seung Oh joined Landworks Studio in June 2022 after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design. Seung is interested in how existing site elements contribute to big picture design and how individuals interact with the site. We asked Seung more about what attracted him to Landscape Architecture.
Why I decided to study landscape architecture, and my ultimate goals within the profession.
Since high school, I wanted to inspire people, help grow and encourage their passions, and trigger creativity through my work. Reflecting back, I sought to motivate and positively influence my own inspiration and creativity by creating unique experiences for others.
After trying out several career paths, I finally decided upon landscape architecture. In this profession, there are endless possibilities and so much potential to influence the quality of people's experiences. At the same time, it was difficult to define the opportunities, so I had frequent headaches trying to do so.
I strive to design outdoor environments to cultivate inspiration and creativity in everyone. I am interested in how the art and design professions are intertwined and expressed in the physical spaces we occupy. Although the methods and approaches used in various creative fields are slightly different, the pursuit is ultimately the same: to foster and enhance our relationships with others.
Outdoor space is a basic spatial form that people encounter and experience every day. Providing a space that combines pleasant sensory experiences, positive emotions, and a sense of culture encourages people to participate in nature more frequently in everyday life. If the outdoor experience is enjoyable, people will go out more often. This sets the foundation for my personal design approach.
I continue study and explore ways to utilize site elements and establish an interplay between and amongst site components. This field provides a space for lifelong discovery.
