Cambridge, MA – Landworks Studio completed the renewal and urban corridor expansion for a new housing community at 55 Wheeler Street in Cambridge, MA. The housing complex, that offers both apartment style living and townhomes, was developed by TOLL Brothers Apartment Living, with Dellbrook | JKS of Quincy, MA as builders, and architecture by Dimella Shaffer of Boston, MA.
Envision Cambridge Citywide Plan
The new housing community, referred to as The Laurent, follows guidelines and recommendations established in the 2019 Alewife Plan developed by Utile Architecture and Planning and the City of Cambridge, which identifies strategies to create a more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive community. Landscape improvements support goals to create a safe, vibrant neighborhood that provides diverse programing, both active and passive, that connects residents with nature, provides recreational resources to encourage active living, and reduces the impact of the built environment. A robust palette of plantings and tall shade trees help combat the heat island effect and prepare for the impacts of climate change.
Wheeler & Fawcett Streetscape Extension
The project addresses two long-neglected streetscapes adjacent to the development. The enhancements include new pavement, street trees, Bluebike racks, and gardens that create a robust buffer to the electrical transfer station. These improvements transform the area from a forgotten backdoor to a welcoming entrance for residents and visitors.
North Park
The property reaches across Fawcett Extension to the edge of the adjacent railroad tracks. This parcel, which includes a visitor’s parking lot, has been largely transformed into a community park, providing additional green space for the neighborhood. The park features a wetland overlook with enhanced plantings, a pergola with swings, benches, bicycle racks, BBQs, and two play areas, creating a welcoming and functional space for people of all ages.
Entry Yard
The Entry Yard connects Buildings A, B, and C, forming the heart of the complex. Building A has townhomes with private entries, while Buildings B and C share this communal space. The yard features a concierge entry, a large amenity room, natural grass for play, garden seating, and ample bicycle racks. Ground floor units have patios that face the gardens, offering shaded retreats for residents.
Entertainment Court
The internal courtyard, surrounded by Buildings B and C, is designed for socializing and relaxation. It features an artificial turf for lawn games such as bocci and cornhole, a swimming pool with a deck and cabanas, ample seating, and outdoor kitchens. Lush planting creates beautiful gardens and shaded areas, making the courtyard a three-season amenity.
Rooftop Gardens
Portions of the buildings have been cut away to create special terraces at floors 2, 5, and 7. Each terrace has beautiful plantings, seating, and fully equipped indoor or outdoor kitchens for entertaining. Some areas are covered with trellis and seating to create cozy, semi-private areas where residents can unwind.
The Mews
Building A offers townhomes and condominium living, allowing for more privacy while still having access to the amenities of the entire complex. Directly in front of Building A is The Mews, a beautifully landscaped pedestrian garden that fosters neighborly gatherings and interactions. Should the adjacent parking garage on Fawcett Street be removed, The Mews is poised to become a vital mid-block connection, seamlessly linking the neighborhood.
