Ropes House | Salem, MA
The Victorian House located in the Northfields District of Salem, MA represents the remaining parcel of what was at one time a much larger estate, which included the entirety of Ropes Point. Once condemned by the City, the House was slated for demolition. It was during this time that the remaining garden was destroyed in anticipation of a hoped-for, future subdivision. Ultimately, the house was rescued and a series of new gardens seek to tell the story of the historic estate through the re-introduction of a series of gardens defined by large specimen trees, fruits and vegetable garden areas and robust understory plantings and hedgerows, comprised of drought tolerant, pollinator species plantings. The design included the planting of 40 trees on this 1/2 acre site.
